Bangkok is a pretty hectic, hot and fast paced city which can be quite stressful at times when you're there for work as well as pleasure. The city is alive with energy and the underground vices and sexual energy of the city can be distracting at the best of times. For this reason myself and Tim decided to book into the Windsor Suite Hotel. A hotel slightly away from the stereotypical tourist areas of cowboy street or Koh San road.
The hotel itself is very nice. Walking in, you are greeted with an expansive lobby which in the evenings, with its huge windows, becomes a calm and relaxing area to get some work done with a coffee.
Our room had all the comforts of home and was furnished with a small pantry, refrigerator, mini bar, satellite TV and LCD, IDD telephone, bathtub, sofa bed and good WiFi. Each room had its own small sitting room equipped with a great desk and comfy chair for getting some late night work done. The coffee machine was also high standard which got plenty of use.
The rooms came with all the usual mod cons and our bathrooms were very nice. Being able to control every aspect of the room with my alarm clock beside my bed was also a nice feature.
The pièce de résistance of the Hotel was its beautiful pool. I myself couldn't get enough of working in the morning sun by the pool with a coffee. If ever I felt a slight pang of tiredness from work - into the pool I dove. The beautiful warm water with the sun streaming down would instantly eradicate any work-related stress I might have had. I always dove in. It always brought me right back to the moment. The splash helped me appreciate where I was and what I was doing and helped me not forget for a single second that I was working by the side of a rooftop pool in Bangkok.
The staff were unbelievably helpful and friendly, always going out of their way to make sure your stay was above par. Every staff member seemed to always be smiling and we really felt at home in the hotel after only staying there a few days.
The Windsor Suite Hotel is located at 8-10 Sukhumvit Soi 20, Sukhumvit Road in the older, more authentic part of Bangkok. For Tim and I the location was perfect. Healthy, local Thai food was at our doorstep and with both of us attempting to learn a few words we always find that it helps to be in the non-tourist areas of any city. Of course, we were only 5 km away from the nightlife everyone knows and loves and with a fantastic subway system and taxis on every corner, a night out on the town wasn't too hard to find.
5 km in Bangkok does take longer to travel than one might imagine with journeys sometimes taking 30 - 40 minutes but every time we did head into the crazier side of Bangkok, I was always glad to be waking up to the more peaceful side of town because of work.
All in all, our stay at the Hotel Windsor Suite was lovely. We got the best out of Bangkok with a balanced week of work, food and drink and on the Virtually Nomadic scale, we give it a very satisfied 3 stars.
